JUMBO WELL 1886: THE EIGHTH WONDER OF THE WORLD

Early in Belle Plaine's history,  wells were drilled for drinking water.  Water was easily found because Belle Plaine sits directly over a large Artesian water supply.   On Main Street, the pressure was so strong that water would be pushed through the pipes to a second story of a building without pumping.

A well digging company that was used often in Belle Plaine was WIlliam Weir and sons.  Here is a photograph of Mr. Weir just after a well was finished near the Tremont House.
